Registry Cleaning Software Is Only Half of the Solution. Discover How to Fully Restore Your PC & Have It Running Fast & Smooth Again.

I'm constantly being asked by peolpe why their computer is so slow and what they can do to fix it. This page is for all you people who need a performance boost for Windows XP.

The first thing you need to understand about Windows XP is that it is a large piece of software with a ton of programs running all at once.

Most people believe that the way to fix a slow computer is to fix the rigistry. The older the computer the more registry entries it will have, most of them being useless and wasting space. A large registry can bog down the cpu and effect performance.

While this is true, cleaning the registry is not the only piece of the puzzle. If you have a car that you want to perform at it's absolute best, fixing the engine is not the only thing you are going to do. You are going to get high performance tires with proper air pressure, make sure the brake pads are fresh, check aerodynamics, exhaust, transmission, etc. etc.

While fixing the registry problems should give you a slight performance boost, I'm sure that is not what you are after. If you want your computer running like new again, you need to learn all the little fixes to completely revive performance.

I have personally worked on 100s of Windows machines and I have come to the conclusion that almost all systems slow down for the following reasons:

Extremely Large Registries

Reg Defense Software

Overview

Reg Defense by Xionix is one of the more popular registry cleaning software packs out there. It is unfortunately just like a lot of other programs out there that tries to claim that is free by offering you a free scan. Then when the problems are diagnosed you must purchase the full product to fix the errors. I'm not a fan of this kind of marketing because it is misleading but it is sort of irrelevant. The software will do what it says. None of the programs that work are free anyway so just know this beforehand.

Features

The good thing about Reg Defense it that is has more features then most programs out there. I will not bore you with the details of these. If you want to learn about all of them just visit their site. Here are some highlights of the features I believe to be important:

  • Startup manager ( a source for lots of problems)
  • Backup and restore tools (always a good idea)
  • automatic scheduler (set and forget. Imortant to continue to diagnose your PC regularly)
  • 32 & 64 bit compatible (this is nice only if you are planning on upgrading to Vista. *Registry Fix does not support this.)
  • Automatic updates ( this is awesome so you won't have to worry about software bugs)
  • 24/7 customer support which is always nice

Pros

  • The startup programs features are nice. I show you how to do this manually in the WinXP Reg Cleaner Bonus pack with more manual control but if you want to automate it this is nice.
  • Automatic updates are very nice. You won't have to worry about compatibility issues with new Windows XP service packs and anything that could happen in the future.)
  • Customer support is always huge with me. They are quick to help you with setup or any other problems that confuse you.
  • Price. Only $29.95

Cons

  • The program itself is graphic intensive. If you have an older less powerful machine that is already slow from registry and other errors this software runs kind of sluggish on it.
  • There a lot of options that can be confusing to beginners. Some of the more advanced features are confusing to follow even more experienced users like me.

Conclusions

This is the clear choice for anyone who is not a total beginner to intuitively using and figuring out software. The price tag is as good as you can find and it is Vista compatible should you want to upgrade.

Unless you have an older machine with limited hardware (i.e. small amounts of memory/RAM or limited hard drive space), Reg Defense should be your choice.

Reg Fix Box

Overview

Registry Fix is a simple program that scans your registry for errors and offers a few, although not many, other features to help your pc. The free scan is that only, a scan. Once you scan your pc and find that you have errors, you must purchase the full version to begin repairs. This may seem like a marketing ploy, and it is. So don't be fooled thinking you will be able to get something for free. Only download it if you are serious. All registry repair software costs money. That's just the way it is.The software does do what it is designed to do pretty well, clean up your registry.

Features

Registry Fix has been developed to work with Windows 98/ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista. This is a plus for people who plan on upgrading to Vista in the future.

Registry Fix will scan for the following:

Missing file associations

Missing startup programs

Invalid device drivers

Invalid application paths

Missing DLL files
Missing help files
Missing system fonts

Advanced options include:

  • Browser Helper Manager (helps disable browser plugins like toolbars)
  • Startup Program Manager (allows you to disable startup programs)
  • Add Remove Program Manager (lets you uninstall programs)
  • Full Registry Backup Utility (makes backups of the registry and lets you restore them)

Pros

The registry scan is very thorough and seems to find more errors than other registry programs

Very easy scan interface

The program is not super flashy or large which makes it easy on system resources to run, expecially on older/slower computers.

Sartup programs manager is nice

Cons

The lack of serverity warning of the errors it finds makes it difficult concluded which errors are in need of fixing. Some registry software packages are over-zealous when it comes to reporting errors and increases the risk of deleting files you need. This program is righ for you if you fall into the paranoia column.

The advanced options are a bit un-intuitive to use and are not user friendly to beginners.

$37.00 price tag is a bit more expensive than the competitors.

Conclustions

Registry Fix is for those of you who have older computers who have limited hardware capabilities. This program will run better than competing registry software on older machines.

The fact that there are not many advanced options and they are difficult to use should not deter you from using this software. To effectively speed up your pc you need to use a registry cleaning tool to clean just that, the registry. After that you can apply the tricks from our Free bonus package, "Windows XP Tune Up Kit" to solve all the other issues. All you're looking for here is an effective tool to clean up registry errors.

Windows XP Registry Cleaner.com's Exclusive Bonus
Tune Up Kit Box

This is the last step of the puzzle that registry cleaners simply cannot fix. This exclusive bonues will teach you all the Windows XP settings fixes that you can make so your computer will go from running okay to running like new.

The Test

Before I reveal the test results here is something you should know first. It is hard to measure a systems performace with data. It simply runs slow medium or fast. Slow systems take a lot of time to load something as simple as one internet browser. Medium systems can handle multiple programs at once but get bogged down sooner then you'd like. Fast systems will load programs in the blink of an eye, startup times are lightning fast and the interface or graphic animations are smooth. It's hard represent this with data. The one piece of data that can show the difference this bonus pack makes is operating system statup time.

In this test I took one machine that was running poorly and measure the time it took to load windows to the point that it was functioning properly and you could begin to run programs. I measured this start time 10 different times and took an average.

Next I ran one of the registry cleaning programs I've reviewed here. (It doesn't matter which one. We're only trying to compare any registry software to the tweaks in this bonus pack) I started up windows 10 different times and took an average startup time again.

The last step I ran was to go through the steps in Windows XP Tune Up Kit. I then initiated a system startup 10 different times again and took an average. Here are the results:

System Configuration Windows XP Startup Time Average
Bare system with no tweaks.
4 minutes 43 seconds
After registry cleaning software installed and all options run to full capability
3 minutes 22 seconds
After registry software + Windows XP Tune Up Kit tweaks
2 minutes 38 seconds

You can see from the testing that Registry Cleaning Software works. But if you want maximum performance there are still some settings in windows that you have to tweak. Unfortunately I have not seen any software that will do this for you. Mostly because a lot of it is subjective. That is why I created this bonus. To help people get thier system running back to the way it once was.

This Bonus Alone Normally Sells For $19.99 But You Can Have It Absolutely Free As My Gift When You Purchase One of the Registry Cleaning Tools Reviewed Above.

To claim your bonus simply send a copy of your receipt to windowsxptuneupkit@gmail.com with the subject line: "win xp tune up kit receipt". Once your receipt is verified your bonus will be sent to you.

Advice Before You Dive Into Registry Repair

Registry clean up software, like anything in life, is not perfect. Therefore it is important to take precautions before changing any registry entries.

Although software and technology are always getting better. It is never without a certain risk. Windows XP relies heavily on it's registry entries and if you delete an important entry, you could cause your system to be unstable. The good news is that there is a very easy fix for this threat that should not deter you from trying to fix your registry problems.

Windows XP has a beautiful tool built into the operating system called system restore. You can take a mirror image of your operating system and it's files ( including the registry entries and everything else), at any point in time. If you ever run into system problems you can go back to this point and restore your hard drive to the way it was before the problem. I will not bother with how to use the system restore function as it is well documented in the windows XP help files, just run a search.

What I highly recommend is to create a system restore point right before you run your registry clean up software. So in the rare event, let me reiterate it is rare, that your system becomes unstable due to the registry cleaning software, you can revert to this restore point and change some of the software settings.

This advice is not only good when editing the registry but also when installing new programs. Say for example you install a new program that you downloaded and you are not sure that the source is credible. In case the program has a virus you can create a restore point before you install. Another reason other than a potential virus is in case you try a program out and don't like it. Instead of just un-installing it the traditional way through the control panel, just use the system restore feature. This way you also remove those registry entries that the control panel un-installation is notorious for leaving in place.
